The Congress of the United States, in the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended, 16 U.S.C. 470) found and declared that “the spirit and direction of the Nation are founded upon and reflected in its historic heritage”; and that “the preservation of this irreplaceable heritage is in the public interest so that its vital legacy of cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational, economic, and energy benefits will be maintained and enriched for future generations of Americans.” The Town of Marana is equally committed to the difficult task of balancing the need for development with the need for preserving our heritage through careful management of our cultural resources. These non-renewable resources are those places that contain the information about our history and prehistory that keep us “inspired by our past” while we build our future.
Cultural Resources Preservation Board
The Cultural Resource Preservation Board is an advisory board to the Town of Marana’s Mayor and Council. The five Board members are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of Town Council Members. This Board fulfills the Town’s vision to preserve the historical culture of Marana as land development occurs. Board members are chosen based on their interest, knowledge, and experience in architecture, archeology, preservation planning, and history.
Board Responsibility
The Board identifies Marana’s cultural and historic sites, districts, and buildings, and develops methods to establish, enhance, and maintain them. They review proposals for historic and cultural restoration and/or renovation, add properties to the Marana Historical Register, and make recommendations on areas and properties that may benefit from a historic overlay zone.
The Process
All Cultural Resource Preservation Board meetings are public and all citizens are invited to attend. Board Meeting Schedule to be determined.
